Estibaliz Carranza - (born September 6, 1978 in Mexico) - Spanish-Mexican businesswoman and two-time murderer.
Who was Estibaliz Carranza?
Goidsargi Estibaliz Carranza Zabala, between 2002 and 2008 known as Goidsargi Estibaliz Holz, is an Austrian criminal sentenced to life imprisonment who shocked the public with her gruesome crimes. She murdered her husband in 2008 and her partner in 2010. The victims' bodies were dismembered and their remains hidden in a bricked-up freezer beneath an ice cream shop in Meidling, Vienna. The discovery of it during renovation works in June 2011 shocked the public.
After the crime was discovered, Carranza fled from Vienna and was captured by Italian police. She was nicknamed the “Ice Lady” in the press and became one of the most famous figures in Austrian criminal history. She is currently serving a life sentence in Asten Prison, located in the town with the same name in Upper Austria. Carranza was the first woman to be transferred to a men's prison, having been found to be a particularly dangerous person to those around her.
Carranza's life story received media attention, resulting in the publication of two books on her life and crimes.
Even as a child, Estibaliz faced her father's tyrannical behavior, which led to her building up blood-chilling fantasies of murder. Despite this, at her father's request, she went on to study economics at the University of Barcelona.
Fiancée
For five years, Estibaliz Carranza was in a relationship with her first fiancé. According to her account, he was excessively possessive and treated her in a violent manner. After graduation, the boyfriend ended the relationship with her, not sharing her desire for a serious relationship. Fantasies of murder were now directed against him. Carranza even considered manipulating the brake lines in his car.
Wedding
Estibaliz Carranza's first husband, Holger Holz, was a member of the Hare Krishna religious community. Holz was fourteen years older than her, and he was working as a refrigerator salesman when he met Carranza. Just a few weeks after their first meeting, he proposed to her. In 2002, Carranza and Holz got married and moved to Berlin, Holz's hometown. Shortly after the wedding, the man began to change, and “showed his true face.” Initially, he deprived his wife of all the money she earned as a waitress, and when she tried to leave him and return to Spain, he took away her documents, preventing her from traveling. The man also allegedly abused her mentally and physically. In 2005, Carranza and Holz moved to Vienna, where they opened an ice cream shop. Soon after arriving in Vienna, Carranza met Manfred Hinterberger, an ice cream machine salesman. Two years later, she began working with him, and decided to divorce Holger Holz. Despite the separation, they continued to share a small apartment.
Murder of husband
On April 27, 2008, her patience ran out.... Carranza came home from work. Her husband immediately began to insult and bully her. After a few hours, the woman decided that she had to put an end to such treatment by her spouse. She shot him three times with a Beretta 22-caliber pistol from behind while he was playing on the computer. The bullets hit him twice in the back of the head and once in the temple. The man died.
After she committed the crime, Estibaliz Carranza left, leaving Holz there.
After a few days, she decided to dispose of the corpse and tried to burn it, but failed. More days passed. The woman decided that she would cut the corpse with a chainsaw, purchased one and proceeded to dismember the body. She put the fragments in black plastic bags and froze them. Estibaliz had to leave the apartment in 2009, so she couldn't let anyone find out about the crime, and so she concreted the bags, with her spouse's body parts. However, there was a problem - Holz's head had frozen to the bottom of the freezer, so she concreted it too. She hid the packages in the basement belonging to the ice cream shop. To people who inquired about Holz, the woman said he had joined a sect in India, so she did not report him missing.
The second victim - Manfred Hinterberger
Soon Estibaliz met Manfred and moved in with him, however, their joy did not last long, Hinterberger often cheated on Esti. Despite this, the woman still desired offspring. Manfred, however, already had children of his own and did not want to have any more. Carranza decided to kill him. She prepared herself thoroughly for this murder, she bought lessons at the shooting range, and before the actual act of killing, she laid out plastic foil so that it would be easier to dispose of the evidence later. On the night of November 21-22, 2010, the woman executed her plan. She murdered Manfred by shooting him four times in the back of the head at close range, while he was sleeping. She proceeded with the body as she did with her husband. Relatives became interested in the man's disappearance, so Carranza reported him missing after four days. Shortly after the murders, as early as December 2010, she began an affair with Roland R., with whom she became pregnant just before her arrest.
Discovering the crime
Carranza's apartment and ice cream store were located in the same building as other stores. After time, there was a need for renovation work in the basement, so on June 6, 2011, one of the tenants broke down door No. 6, which was padlocked. Guns were found there, as well as three coolers flooded with concrete. A human leg was probably sticking out of one of the containers. The resident called the police, who revealed various body parts of the killed men. However, when it comes to Holz's body, only the skull was found.
On June 7, 2011, Estibaliz Carranza withdrew all her money from her account, her safety deposit box, took her passport and savings book and went to the airport.
Although the woman had booked a ticket to Paris, out of fear of being arrested she did not get on the plane, she decided that she would go to Italy. By that time, officers were already searching for her. Esti slept in a guesthouse changing her identity, the next day she went to another city. There she met a street artist who agreed to spend the night with her, but she made him suspicious and he called the police.
Arrest
On June 6, 2011, at around 7:30 a.m., Carranza was arrested in Udine, and an extradition request was prepared. In the meantime, the identity of one of the victims was established, it was Manfred Hintberger. During the interrogation, it turned out that the woman was two months pregnant, she immediately confessed to the murder and disposal of the bodies of the two men. On June 24, 2011, Esti was taken into custody on charges of committing two murders. On January 1, 2012, she gave birth to a son, who was handed over to his father.
In March 2012, the two were married in the interrogation area of Josefstadt prison in Vienna.
Psychiatric opinion, trial
A psychiatric opinion in early July 2012 showed that the woman was extremely dangerous, and that she had the mental capacity to recognize her actions when she committed them. Forensic psychiatrist Adelheid Kastner diagnosed Carranza with a severe personality disorder and expressed concern that she might commit serious crimes again at large. The trial ended with a life sentence for double murder and an order for placement in a mental institution for criminals.
Esti expressed no remorse, she tried to justify her actions by taking tranquilizers and her reluctance to elicit sympathy.
Carranza was the first woman to be transferred to a men's prison, the judge declared that she was extremely dangerous to those around her.
